From the Principal’s Desk – The Power of Yet
At our school, we believe that every student has the ability to be successful. Success isn’t just about getting the answer right the first time – it’s about trying, learning, and growing along the way.
One of the most important messages we want our students to understand is the power of yet. When a student says, “I can’t do this”, we encourage them to add one small but powerful word – yet.
- “I can’t solve this problem… yet.”
- “I’m not confident reading aloud… yet.”
- “I can’t play this song on my instrument… yet.”
The word yet reminds us that learning takes time, effort, and persistence. Every challenge we face is an opportunity to grow. Mistakes aren’t failures – they’re stepping stones to success.
We encourage our students to always try their best, no matter how hard something may seem at first. The truth is, you can do almost anything you put your mind to if you keep working at it. Some skills will come quickly; others will take more time. But with determination, support, and a positive mindset, every student can achieve amazing things.
Let’s work together – teachers, parents, and students – to build a culture where we celebrate effort, perseverance, and improvement. Let’s remind our children that it’s okay not to be perfect, it’s okay to struggle, and it’s always okay to ask for help. What matters most is that they keep going.
Because here at our school, we know that you might not be able to do it… yet – but you will.
School Attendance Matters
Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in a child’s learning and wellbeing. Every day at school builds on the one before it – when children miss lessons, they can miss key concepts, fall behind in their work, and feel less confident in the classroom.
Consistent attendance helps children develop good learning habits, build strong friendships, and feel connected to their school community. It also teaches responsibility, resilience, and the importance of commitment.
Even small absences can add up. Missing just one day a fortnight equals four full weeks of learning lost in a year. This can make it harder for students to catch up and keep pace with their classmates.
We understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness or family circumstances. However, making school a priority and scheduling appointments or holidays outside of school hours wherever possible ensures children have the best chance to succeed.
Let’s work together to help every child attend every day – because every day counts.
Book week
Although I was away sick last week, I was still able to enjoy the Book Week festivities through our social media. It was such a delight to see the incredible creativity and colour in the costumes worn by our students and staff. The effort, imagination, and enthusiasm everyone put into their outfits truly brought our school to life. Celebrating our love of reading together – and seeing so many favourite book characters come to life – was a joy. Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun and made the day so special!

Thank you for a Wonderful Book Week!
A heartfelt thank you to all the families and friends for your incredible support during Book Week! The creativity and effort that went into the costumes were amazing, making it a real challenge for our staff to choose the best dressed.
Each year level proudly presented a display inspired by the stories they’ve been exploring in class. The dedication and creativity shown by our teachers in helping students bring these displays to life was truly amazing.
Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to vote for their favourite display and congratulations to our Preps, who were the winners!
We’re already looking forward to next year’s Book Week parade and can’t wait to see what inspiring ideas you’ll bring to life!
Happy week 8!
Belinda Whittet.

Ms Everingham - HOD - Student Engagement
This term has flown by so quickly, filled with many exciting events and opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and celebrate together. From special activities and classroom achievements to whole-school events, it has been wonderful to see our students engaging with enthusiasm. As we look ahead, there are still plenty of exciting events on the calendar to finish the term strongly. We remind families that every school day counts – regular attendance is vital to your child’s success and wellbeing. The Queensland Department of Education highlights that attending school every day helps students build strong learning habits, stay connected, and make the most of the opportunities on offer.
Attendance Matters! 🎉
Regular attendance at school is essential for both learning and wellbeing. Research shows that in Queensland, students with higher attendance achieve better academically and also develop important social and emotional skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience. By law, students must attend school each day unless there is a reasonable excuse. Schools monitor attendance closely and will follow up with families regarding unexplained absences. If your child is reluctant to attend, or you are concerned about unexplained absences, please contact the school so we can work together to support your child.
Congratulations to our top classes for Week
- Junior Class 1A - 80%
- Senior Class 5/6B -78.40%
🏆 And a big cheer for 2A and 4/5A – Best Class on Parade!
Every day at school counts — keep up the great effort, everyone! 🌟

External Providers Requests
External providers can offer a valuable service in supporting individual students. Collaboration between the provider and school can result in more effective support for the student. As part of the external provider’s process of assessing need and supporting students, schools may be requested to provide information regarding a student’s current presentation, progress, functioning and support needs. Given that the information involved is often of a sensitive nature and can rely on specific administration protocols, Leichhardt State School adopts a best practice approach when responding to requests received from external providers. A Consent to Share will also be required to be signed before the school can speak to any external providers and can be found in the main office. To help us process requests efficiently, we kindly ask that the school be given at least four weeks' notice. We understand that urgent requests may occasionally arise, and we will do our best to accommodate them whenever possible.
The Requests for Information and Assessments for External Providers and Consent to Share form can be located on the school website or paper copies can be found at the main office.

National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
Leichhardt State School celebrates National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day
Last week, Leichhardt State School proudly hosted National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. Our students, staff, families, and community came together to celebrate culture, connection, and the importance of children as our future. The day was filled with colour, music, laughter, and learning – from performances and storytelling to hands-on activities that highlighted the rich traditions of Australia’s First Nations peoples. It was a joyful celebration that reminded us all of the strength, resilience, and pride within our community.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this day successful.

Sports News
Touch Football Teams Shine in Opening Rounds
The first two weeks of the Touch Football season have seen our four Leichhardt teams competing with great spirit, teamwork, and plenty of highlights.
- Senior Boys - The Senior boys started off the campaign with a tough 5-3 loss to Hattonvale A however bounced back with a convincing 14–1 win over Hatton Vale B, then carried that momentum into Week 2 with back-to-back clean sheets: a 4–0 win against Churchill and a 3–0 win over Ipswich West.
- Junior Boys started strongly with a 10–2 win over Churchill in Week 1. Week 2 was much closer, finishing in a 3–3 draw with Blair before a narrow 3–5 loss to Mt Crosby B.
- Senior Girls impressed with dominant Week 1 wins (7–1 Hatton Vale, 8–0 Blair), then continued their strong form in Week 2 with a huge 14–0 victory over Churchill and a hard-fought 3–3 draw against Ipswich West.
- Junior Girls enjoyed a big 15–1 win over Churchill in Week 1 before falling just short in two tight contests: 1–2 to Blair and 3–3 with Hatton Vale A. In Week 2, they showed resilience but went down 3–8 against a strong Mt Crosby A side.
All teams have shown outstanding effort, skill, and sportsmanship across their opening games. We’re excited to see them build on these results as the season continues!
From The Teachers
Prep
Prep A News
Prep A have enjoyed learning through play to extend our understanding of maths concepts such as addition and subtraction. Using both six-sided and ten-sided dice, we practiced addition and subtracting counters, animals and vehicles. Prep A have also incorporated art into our maths learning by making spotty monsters with sticky dots and pretend hot chocolates using pom-poms. This has prepared us for this term’s assessments.
Prep/1B News
Prep/1B have been very busy over the past few weeks! The students are loving being little Master Chefs each Friday. So far, they have made milkshakes, fairy bread, toasted sandwiches, cheesymite scrolls, pizza, and banana muffins. The cheesymite scrolls were definitely a favourite!
This week, the Prep students have been presenting their retells about our Play Matters morning, while the Year One students have been presenting their procedural texts on how to make traffic light biscuits. Everyone has shown wonderful confidence standing in front of the class to share their work.
In Mathematics, students have been exploring addition, subtraction, and equal sharing. They have especially enjoyed creating funny stories to role-play their number sentences.

Year 1
The Grade 1’s had a lot of fun at the Indigenous Literacy Day last week. They had the opportunity to get their face painted; hair sprayed different colours, eat popcorn and engage in a range of fun activities.

Year 6
The 6’s have been working hard to complete their assessments this term. In Science, students have been learning about earthquakes and cyclones, while in HASS they have been exploring the Great Barrier Reef. In English, we are practising persuasive writing by convincing others of the importance of topics ranging from class pets to mobile phones in school. In Mathematics, students are applying their knowledge of fractions, decimals, and percentages to design and share their own games. We also really enjoyed celebrating Book Week by creating our own Diary of a Wimpy Kid book covers and cartoons.

Celebration of Learning

Fortnightly Feast
This fortnight’s special treat is a delicious apple and raspberry oat slice – a wholesome, fruity slice that will be a hit with the whole family. The balance of sweet apple, tangy raspberries, and crunchy oats makes it the perfect snack to enjoy and share!!
