Volume 19- 12th November 2021
From the Principal
Reading is everywhere! Reading is everyone’s business! Leichhardt learners have set another record this year by recording over 200 students who have finished the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This is a fantastic result for our students and shows how far we have come despite the challenges of the COVID years behind us. Special thanks to Mrs Finlay, Head of Department – Reading, for leading this important work at Leichhardt.
With vaccination rates passing the desired percentage in Queensland, vaccinated people will be able to enjoy more freedoms and fewer restrictions. The important message about vaccinations is spreading fast and more of our staff are getting vaccinated every day to do their part to protect our precious community. This is especially important considering that 30% of our community are indigenous and hence belong to the identified vulnerable groups. By getting a jab, we are doing our bit to protect everyone.
Last week, we acknowledged the lovely tuckshop ladies who prepare food and drinks for students and staff every day. In less than a year and with limited capacity due to COVID, our tuckshop has been very productive and supportive of our community. Please take time to say ‘thank you’ to everyone involved, especially Andrea and Kristy, for being day every day and helping us all with a smile on their face!
End of year is the best time for schools! One of the things that makes us very excited is the selection of the Student Leaders for 2022. This morning, a group of Year 5 students presented their leadership speeches and received fantastic feedback from the audience. The competition is fierce, and I think that it will be very difficult to decide who to vote for this year. I was so proud to hear many students talk about their role models amongst the current leaders.
The future of Leichhardt is looking better every year! Thank you for being part of our journey!

News from the HOSES
Over the last couple of weeks, we were fortunate to be able to trial some new furniture that we were looking at purchasing.
This furniture was welcomed into a number of our classrooms, and provided wonderful support to many students.
As a result, we have now placed an order for new furniture to be delivered and it will be ready to use in different rooms throughout our school next year. We are very excited about adding this furniture to learning and break out spaces within our school as part of building an inclusive environment. This furniture provides movement opportunities to students who need proprioceptive input during the day and find it difficult to concentrate and learn effectively when they are required to stay stationery for long amounts of time. It also provides support for core muscle strength and comfort/relief for our children who are seeking or trying to avoid sensory input.

STEAM News
Over the last two weeks, for science, our students in Year Five continued learning about how First Nations Peoples design shelters to keep cool. They have built a model Gunyah, using a simple shelter design, to investigate which direction to face the Gunyah to receive the maximum amount of shade throughout the day. Our Year Six students have continued their biology unit on ecosystems and plant physical conditions and how we can learn from traditional ecological knowledge. They are conducting an experiment to determine whether more fertiliser results in a healthier plant.
In Art, prep students are working on their visual art assessment in which they painted a self-portrait. In this self portrait they had to show an emotion of their choice. The students had a lot of fun doing this activity and produced some truly beautiful work.
For Technology in Year 5 and 6, the students have started a design and technology unit where they are using hand stitching techniques to create Christmas decorations.

In Science students have been exploring forces. They are pictured exploring magnetism and experimenting with the force of the north and south poles. Students investigated how the magnets worked, the strength and enjoyed testing a variety of objects to determine if they were attracted to the variety of magnets. 4B have then used their knowledge of contact and non-contact forces to design and create a game that has a magnetic force. They are very excited to construct, test and evaluate their games!

Sustainability Summit
Last Wednesday, a group of Year 4 and 5 students attended the annual Youth Sustainability Summit here in Ipswich. Whilst there, the students listened to different presentations from schools and organisations who are focused on sustainability and caring for the environment. Some of the organisations involved where Down 2 Earth, where a man named Dale collects 10c bottles to raise money to feed the homeless. They listened to a company called Mallow who collect food scraps from local businesses and turn them into compost. Goodna State School and Springfield Central State School gave presentations on sustainable practises they have implemented into their school.
After lunch, the students then completed activities learning about how to care for the environment, they learnt how to compost, save energy and plant plants, which they got to take home.
In the afternoon they completed an action plan on the things we can do at school to be more sustainable. They came up with amazing ideas that I am looking forward to seeing implemented in school. Our planet is in safe hands with our awesome Leichhardt Learners!
