Volume 21- 10th December 2021
From the Principal
As we end the school year and go on a well-deserved holiday, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for their care and support. It has been a tough year for some of us, but the spirit of our community wins every time and brings smiles to our faces.
Thank you, parents and caregivers, for supporting our initiatives and entrusting us with your child’s education. We are grateful for the open and respectful communication, for your kind words and appreciation of our teachers and support staff. We have the best job in the world, and your support makes it even better.
Thank you to our Year 6 students – the best graduating students in the Universe!!! As principal, I am so proud to send these young people into the world. We have done everything we can to ensure our students leave Leichhardt as independent, kind and safe learners who walk proudly and confidently into the future. We wish them all the best on their journey and hope to hear their stories of success for years to come.
This week, we trialled a new approach to the last week of school. Our students have started in their new classes and met their 2022 teachers. We are hoping that the transition to next year will be much smoother and the learning will be able to start immediately. The feedback from students and staff regarding the change has been very positive. I would like to invite all parents and carers to share their feedback with me about the changes we implemented this week. Thank you in advance.
Whilst we are going on holidays, a lot of work will be done on the school grounds in our absence. We have been granted Government funding to install solar power in A Block, and the company has set up to start the work on Monday. In addition, we are hoping to have the Gathering Place completed by the end of the year, depending on the weather. The third project will start on 10 January to remove the old entrance to the school and replace it with a simple roof that will allow better visibility in the carpark area.
From our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year! Stay safe and enjoy the festive season with your children.
Reading @ Leichhardt
The last two weeks have been extremely busy with ‘Letter Writing to Santa’, engaging in fun literacy activities during a visit from the Ipswich Library Staff, a range of ‘Spell-Offs’ across the school, celebrating the November Gold Reading Eggs awards and catching up with our ‘Deadly Readers’ and ‘Pick of the Week’ Readers. But even though we are at the end of the school year, that does not mean that reading has to come to an end. Please remember to keep reading over the holidays! The Ipswich Library is running a number of holiday reading events and I think there is even some more ‘Letter Writing to Santa’….. Finally, please encourage your child to continue engaging with Reading Eggs online as we will be celebrating the December Gold Reading Eggs awards on our return to school in 2022. Imagine how exciting that would be for your child to receive a Gold Reading Eggs award at the very first Assembly of 2022!
4B
In our last week together 4B celebrated their learning and achievements from the term with a board games session. The students loved working together to play a variety of board games. They had great conversations throughout their session and worked cooperatively together. It was wonderful to celebrate the students accomplishments from not only this term, but their growth across this year.
Deadly @ Leichhardt
Murri Christmas and a Deadly New Year Everyone
This year has been an amazing year for all our deadly Mirrigins (Stars) of Leichhardt. Thank you to all the wonderful staff and students who have supported the deadly room. Throughout the year we have had play time, arts and craft, visits from Elders, the community, the day care and playgroup. We celebrated a wonderful Naidoc Day with many special visitors, Elders, Aunty Sharron, Uncle Bruce-Murri Tukka, Rhan Hooper (AFL/Artist), Dakoda Davidson (AFL), Brett Levey (Virtual Songlines), Kambu, Pastor Rob and Shayne Neumann MP. A big thank you to the Deadly Dancers- you have done Leichhardt proud representing our school at many events.
We can’t wait to show you the finished result of the mosaics for the Gathering Ground that Elders and students have created. To all the teachers who brought students down to learn about culture and art, thank you for your commitment to culture and making a difference in our children’s education.
Being a part of the Deadly Dancers was fun. I liked learning new dancers, doing traditional dance, making a lot of new friends and learning what nationality they are. I loved being a leader of our school and teaching and encouraging other kids. I am going to miss my best mate, Mark Kirisome, Miss Hooper and Miss Emma. Thank you to Mrs Bogicevic. Over the past year and half you have made some wonderful changes to our school for the better. Thank you for listening to us students and thank you for caring about us.

Learning @ Leichhardt
This term we were very fortunate to provide swimming instruction for our students and after a considerable amount of time without due to COVID19 it was an amazing experience for everyone. The program we used was Swim and Survive which is from the Royal Life Saving Society. Our main aim was to teach students how to stay safe while enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of swimming and aquatic activities. This included water safety and identifying major risks at home and in all waterways such as rivers and beaches. The older students were taught how to safely put on lifejackets and recue techniques, whilst younger students were taught water awareness and basic survival techniques such as floating. The students were able to finish with some structured free choice activities for their last lessons and presented with vouchers and certificates for their participation. Students will have the opportunity to consolidate their swimming levels next year, however in the meantime, please contact the Leichhardt Pool to discuss their fantastic programs being run over the holidays.
Merry Christmas Ms Bugg.

Mission Australia Play and Learn
This term at playgroup we learnt about different countries & cultures each week. It has been great to be able to have families share their culture with each other.
Last Thursday I held a Play a Book session in the hall. At this session we had playgroup families attend as well as some children from the Kindy across the road & the Pre Preps were invited to come along as well.
This week is our MEGA Christmas playgroup where we get to build a snowman from playdough & other items, there is painting Christmas decorations & each child will receive a personalised decoration with their photo on it & some Christmas cookies.
If you would like to come along the group meets every Thursday in the Library from 9-11am & is for families with children aged between 0-5 years old. It’s free & tea/coffee & morning tea is provided.
I look forward to seeing you all in 2022. Playgroup will resume in week 2 which is Thursday 3rd February.
Please contact Channon Schiemer from Mission Australia to find out more information on Facebook messenger or call her on 0475 798 198.
