Volume 6 - 29th April 2022
From The Principal
Health and safety of our students and staff remains our priority as we move towards cooler months. We continue to do a deep COVID clean every day, in addition to airing our classrooms and encouraging the students to practise good hygiene. As a parent or carer, you can assist with this by keeping your children at home if they are sick. If you child shows symptoms at school, please collect a RAT test from our Student Services.
At the moment, three of our staff have COVID-19 which is having a huge impact on our ability to cover classes of absent teachers. The global teacher shortage means that we have to merge classes at times to ensure students continue to learn effectively. This is not our preference but a necessity at this point in time. I am proud of the proactive work we have done already in the timetable to ensure all students get the best possible opportunity to learn.
In staffing news, I am pleased to inform you that Nicole Curwen has been successful in obtaining the Business Manager position at our school. Nic has been our Community Support Coordinator this year and has done an excellent job connecting with our community and offering support. Until we appoint another CSC, Nic will continue to be the contact point for parents and carers for any support issues.
Our focus on teaching and learning remains strong as we introduce Note-Taking to our Senior Students as a way of organising new information and better understanding key points in new learning. Note-taking is an excellent skill to have as the students prepare for high school.
The P&C is still looking for volunteers to help out in the Tuckshop. If you have a couple of hours spare in a week to help out, please reach out and express your interest. Your contribution however small will be greatly appreciated.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums at Leichhardt! I hope that you get spoilt with gifts and hugs from your children. Thank you to our P&C for running a Mother’s Day stall today. I hope your child managed to find something nice for you.
I hope you enjoy the Newsletter!
ANZAC Day Commemorations
On Thursday 21st April, Leichhardt State School commemorated those soldiers who have served, are still serving or have fallen in the lines of battle at our ANZAC service. We welcomed a number of special guests, including our local councilors and Mr Isaac Adams, a return veteran of Afghanistan who addressed our students on the importance of teamwork and mateship. Each class layed a wreath beside those from our special guests, which were on display at our schools memorial stone. The students of Leichhardt did an outstanding job at showing respect during this occasion.
Reading At Leichhardt
Term 2 was off to an exciting start with Reading Eggs awards being celebrated on Assembly!
It was wonderful to celebrate the reading achievement of the students.
Below are just some of the students who received awards.
The April Reading Eggs Awards will be celebrated soon!
Please encourage your child to engage daily with Reading Eggs or the Reading Eggs library!
If you do not have your child’s Reading Eggs login details, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Learning At Leichhardt
2B
This week in 2B , we have been learning about all things water in science.
We were able to go outside and investigate, with Mrs W, what water looked like on different surfaces around the school.
Physical Education
We have had a wonderful start to the term in PE. The students have been building their skills in athletics and each week will learn a new skill. Some of the athletic events the students will be learning throughout the term include ball games, high jump, long jump, shot put and sprints. It has been fantastic to hear the students encouraging each other using positive words.
ART
In art the students are looking at the elements of art - shapes, organic, geometric as well as lines and texture.
From Student Services
Student Services…We Care!
In Student Services we have been very busy working at keeping our students safe and well!
Please remember, if your children are unwell in any way, keep them at home to rest and recover.
Students showing any signs of illness will be sent home and if showing symptoms of COVID-19 will be given a RAT test to be completed at home. Students may return to school if they have a negative test result and are symptom free.
Updating Contact Details!
Please remember, to update your contact details with the school.
Up-to-date contact details ensures that the best care can be given to our students and parents/care givers can be contacted quickly, in the event of illness or serious injury.
Lost Property!
If you have lost something, please come down to Student Services and check out the big red tub, where you will find lost property.
Please remember to name your children’s belongings as this helps in returning items to their rightful owners.
Preloved School Uniforms!
Thank you to those families that have donated preloved school uniforms. If your children have grown out of their school uniforms, it would be greatly appreciated if you would please consider donating them to Student Services. Student’s often require a change of clothes while at school and our supplies are getting low. We would also appreciate donations of preloved shoes that are in good condition.
Gardening!
Our tomatoes have been growing well and some of them are almost ready to eat.
Our flowers are in full bloom, brightening up our school.
Riddles!
What has a face and two hands but no arms or legs?
A clock!
Everyone has it and no one can lose it, what am I?
A shadow!
Health and Well Being!
Hand washing, also known as hand hygiene, is the act of cleaning one's hands with soap or handwash and water to remove viruses/bacteria/microorganisms, dirt, grease or other harmful and unwanted substances from our hands.
As the cooler months approach and the risk of colds, flu and Covid are more likely, hand hygiene is extremely important. Please teach and encourage your children to practice good hand hygiene. Washing hands, whilst singing Happy Birthday to oneself, is a good guide to how long to wash for. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitiser is a good alternative.
