Volume 10- 25 June 2021
From the Principal
Respect is one of the greatest expressions of love.
There are many quotes out there on Respect, which is one of Leichhardt State School values, but I decided to choose this one as it highlights what lies at the heart of respect – love. When we show respect, we show love in our relationships with others and our environment. At Leichhardt, we teach students about Respect and why it is important to show it in all interactions. The result of this teaching are our Leichhardt students – the wonderfully respectful little people who make our lives so much better!
Today, the whole school is buzzing with excitement over the Maths Week and the arrival of Captain Red Beard! The students are so excited about the cake bake and I just wanted to say a huge thank you to parents and older siblings who helped out as responsible adults to get the cakes to look just amazing!!! I hope you enjoy reading more about the week in this newsletter.
Today, our school appointed an Indigenous Community Coordinator, Aunty Marly Hooper, who will start in her new position early in Term 3. Marly’s work with Leichhardt spans many years of making connections with the community and improving outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
As this newsletter edition is the celebration of the beautiful learning we have done and fun we have had this term, I would like to thank you all for your support, understanding and collaboration over the last couple of months. Without your support as parents and carers, we only get half the job done. With your support, we can do anything!
I would also like to thank all our staff for the hard work, positive attitude and enthusiasm they show every day. It is great to be part of Team Leichhardt!
And most importantly, a huge thank you to our students for always trying their best to Be King, Be Safe and Be a Learner! This week’s Gotcha winners are:
Anthony, Justin, Chelsea and Zakk.
From the Deputy Principal – Mrs Tracey Phillipps-Lewis

Attendance
Attending school every day matters!
Parents have a responsibility to ensure their child attends school every day. As you are aware, notes have been sent home regarding student unexplained absences. Thank you to everyone who has returned their child’s unexplained absence letters. This assists us in keeping accurate records.
When your child is absent, you must inform the school as soon as possible stating the reason and expected duration of the absence. Absences relating to birthdays, shopping, refusing to attend school, visiting friends are all classed as unauthorised absences and, as such, are considered approved absences.
If your child is persistently unwell, it is recommended that you provide a medical certificate.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to school, please contact the office and let them know of the situation and a member of the Leadership Team will be in touch.
Changes to Classes
Over the course of the Semester the number of students in our Year 2 classes have dropped, making the classes very small with low attendance. Currently in Year 2 there are only enough students for two classes. The success of the classes working together and the reduced numbers of students have provided us with an opportunity to make this a permanent shift.
On Monday 21st June (Week 10), 2B students were divided between 2A and 2C.
This change has been successful and the students have settled into their new classes well.
Staffing Changes
This term we farewell Ms Jillian Lieschke (1B Wednesdays, 6A Connect, 5A English, Year 5 and 6 Humanities teacher) and Ms Fiona Chapman (Year 5 and 6 German teacher). We wish them both well in Term 3.
In Term 3:
Ms Everingham (previously the 2B teacher), will be joining the Year 5 and 6 students. Ms Everingham will be taking 6A Connect Class, Technology and Humanities.
Ms Williams will continue to work 4 days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Ms Rivett will also move to working 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday.
We will be welcoming Ms Leanne Bugg who will be taking 1B on Wednesdays and 3A on Fridays. Ms Bugg is very excited to be joining our school.

During Term 3, students in Year 4 to 6 will have the opportunity to participate in an elective subject. This elective will occur in Session 6 on Wednesday afternoons and will be mixed age groups. This subject will not be reported on.

Writing @ Leichhardt
Great readers are great writers and our great readers in the Senior School are preparing for their next competition scheduled for the 12th of August. Students, in a team of up to 10 students, are excited to be competing in the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ competition. As the name suggests, students are required to work together to write and illustrate a book in a day.
The competition also supports a very worthwhile cause. Money raised from fund-raising for the competition will be donated to The Kids’ Cancer Project.
The funds raised from Friday’s Free Dress Day gold coin donations will be donated to The Kids’ Cancer Project.
Learning @ Leichhardt
Prep A
On Monday we had an amazing day at our first ever sports carnival. Everyone was dressed up in their house colours and did a great job of having a go at all the races and activities. There were lots of ribbons won and lots of proud students and families. It was great to hear and see everyone encouraging each other throughout the day.
This week in Prep A we have been working hard together to answer Mr Smiths maths questions to collect the pieces to Captain Red Beards treasure map.
We have also had a great time working with our Year 4 friends. We showed our friends how well we can read and write. We have had an amazing term learning lots of new things and having lots of fun. We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and stays safe
Prep B
Over the last weeks of term we have focused on learning in fun and engaging ways. Some of the activities we have done are: Learning our sight words on chatterboxes; Learning the alphabet with crayon resist painting; Guessing the letter in rice by feeling with our fingers and not looking; Practicing our letter formation with coloured pegs on boards and pipe cleaners; Practicing how to spell and write our names correctly with collage; Threading our names; and Pom Pom colour matching just to name a few. We have all really enjoyed learning in the way and hope to continue with these kinds of activities regular for the rest of the year.
We wish you all a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing you next term.
Year 1
The Year Ones have made it through to the end of another term. It’s been a huge term and the children have worked really hard. Their efforts are starting to pay off, particularly in their reading. As you can see from the signs below, reading is everywhere and it is everyone’s business. So, on the holidays, please find some time to read with your children even if it’s just a street sign whilst driving. Sight words are also fairly easy to find in books and in the environment. See how many you can find at the shops! Reading Eggs is still available as well. Your efforts at home make a huge difference in the classroom and the children are the ones who benefit (and the teachers too who get very excited when the children achieve their goal). Enjoy your holidays and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.
Miss T and Ms W
4A
4B
After analysing and writing many stories together, the year 4 students have been working on their own traditional story in English. To publish this story, we decided as a class to draw the illustrations and present our book to the students in Prep A. 4B have worked very hard to design their book, including the front and back cover. They then loved the opportunity to share their hard work with the students in Prep A at a morning of reading. 4B have enjoyed creating stories so much many students have used their free time to write more!
Year 5 Arts
This term, year 5 students have been designing and creating a sculpture using recycled materials. They have learnt about the impact of painted murals around the community and have chosen their own contextual topic to paint on to their sculpture. Students will have the opportunity to finish their murals next term. Stay tuned for the end result!
Year 6 Arts
This term, year 6 students have been studying Media Arts and learning about how camera angles and shot types create different moods and evoke different emotions. We have spent lessons in the outdoor learning area looking at how camera angles would change how we perceive different areas. Last week, the students used the iPads to interview staff members about current news events.
