Getting to know Mr Jack
Hello everyone! I'm Mr Jack, and I like learning languages. You'll see me around the school every Thursday and Friday. If you do, come say "Hello"!
What's your favorite way to spend a day off?
My favourite thing to do on a day off is to study and read comic books.
What is your favorite ice cream flavour?
My favourite ice cream flavour is strawberry.
When you were a kid, did you eat the crusts on your sandwich?
I always ate my crust, it's the best part!
‘Striving To Be Kind’ @ Leichhardt
On Friday, staff and students donned dressing gowns, beanies and crazy socks to raise money for children’s cancer research. As can be seen from the pictures below, much fun was had in raising money for this important cause.
Year 1B @ Leichhardt
1B went the Deadly room to spend time with Aunty Marly to extend their learning experience about the Rainbow Serpent. The students used their knowledge of the Rainbow Serpent to create their own version of the serpent.
Premier's Reading Challenge @ Leichhardt
It is wonderful to see so many of our students independently completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge! Pictured below (L->R) are Nikeeta (5A) , Ayden (3A) and Fedor (3A) . Well done, students!
Also, Prep B have finished the challenge as a whole class! Only 12 more classes to get home and Leichhardt will make it into the Premier’s Reading Challenge ‘Hall of Fame’!
Please encourage your child to complete the challenge. Students have until August, 26 to complete the challenge. Below are the targets:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books.
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books.
- Years 5 and 6 must read at least 15 books.
If students do not have access to many books at home, please remember the Reading Eggs library is very extensive with books from a range of genres.
If you would like to complete the challenge at home with your child, please contact Mrs Finlay (HOD-Reading) at efinl9@eq.edu.au for a Premier’s Reading Challenge record form.
Spelling @ Leichhardt
It was great to see the Year 5s confidently share on Assembly, the methodical process they use to spell long words.
The students demonstrated how when they are asked to spell a multisyllable word, they do the following:
- Say the word
- Break it into its syllables
- Sound out the sounds in each syllable
- Attach letters to the syllable
- Read the word to check that it is correct
The word the students demonstrated on Assembly was ‘anthropomorphism’. Anthropomorphism is a literary device that the students have been studying as they read the book ‘Nim’s Island’. It refers to animal characters in texts demonstrating human qualities or behaviours.
It was impressive to see the Year 5s work together as a team to showcase their spelling skills. Well done, Year 5s!
‘Readers are Leaders’ @ Leichhardt
The below pictured Year 5 students are certainly leaders when it comes to reading. Not only do they encourage and support the junior Leichhardt students with their reading, but they take their reading and writing talents to the day care centre across the road to make a difference. The day care centre children look forward to the ‘big kids from Leichhardt’ coming to visit to read, write, sing and play with them. Well done, Year 5s! You are certainly demonstrating how to ‘be kind’, ‘be safe’ and ‘be learners’!
Book Week @ Leichhardt
It’s ‘Book Week’ term and Friday, Week 7, 26 August is the Leichhardt’s Annual Book Week Parade! We also have author of ‘The Precious Plum’, Jennifer Horn, visiting with us on Book Week Parade day. Please encourage your child to start thinking about their costume, as Friday, 26 August will soon be here!
If you have any questions regarding Book Week or the Book Week Parade, please contact Mrs Elena Finlay (Head of Department – Reading) efinl9@eq.edu.au.

Teaching and Learning @ Leichhardt
We had the start of a very exciting collaboration on Friday afternoon where our year 5 and 6 students in the AVID elective participated in their first global citizenship online lesson with Loganlea State High School. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning virtually and were complimented on the amazing students they are! Other photos I have shared with you are the Year 1's enjoying their time in the beautiful weather writing their spelling words, as well as the amazing notetaking in Year 3! Well done, Leichhardt for being so engaged in your learning and taking on new opportunities!
At Leichhardt we pride ourselves on allowing preservice teachers the opportunity to work with our teachers and students. This year alone we have already hosted 8 preservice teachers from several universities. This is fantastic opportunity provides many wonderful teaching and learning experiences for all involved and is a great way for our school to be positively recognised in the wider community. Recently we received lovely recognition for our work in this area by receiving a certificate from one of the universities we support.
Children's Advisory Council
Lilly and William have been representing Leichhardt in the Children's Youth Advisory Council. They have attended many meetings with a number of different local schools to discuss what community means to them and opportunities for change and growth in our local community. They have shown courage in new environments and are congratulated on their efforts on this council. Lilly and William completed a survey for students in years 3 to 6 to allow other children to have their say and are looking forward to analysing the data with their other council team members at their next meeting. Well done, Lilly and William.

Learning through Play
Children learn and develop when they are immersed, engaged and active in a responsive learning environment.
A play-based approach to learning is an essential element in the early years curriculum to build the foundations for children’s future success.
In Prep at Leichhardt we incorporate play into our lessons every day in a number of different ways. Here are just some of the fun activities our Preps engage in each day:
- Reading Eggs, a fun online reading resource, to practise phonics and reading skills.
- Hands-on games and experiences to support English lessons.
- A variety of Maths games and experiences to develop numeracy skills.
- Hands-on experiments during Science.
If you would like to learn more about helping your child learn through play please contact to your child’s teacher.
NAIDOC Day Celebrations @ Leichhardt
Last Friday, Leichhardt State School celebrated NAIDOC day. The day commenced with a special assembly in the Hall. Indigenous staff members shared stories about what their life was like when they were young and the importance of their culture. The day continued with multiple fun activities, including indoor games, colouring in wooden boomerangs and learning about different tools Indigenous people used in daily life. Students also learnt how an important part of the Indigenous culture was to not waste anything and only use what was needed.
Over the day, every year level participated in different activities at various times. In the indoor games’ activity, we played two games. The first one was about throwing a small ball at a larger, rolling ball to change its path. The second game was about putting tennis balls in a flexible tube and trying to get them to land in a bucket.
It was great to have the students from Payne Road State School join us for our NAIDOC celebrations.
