Volume 12 - 31st August 2023
From Our Principal
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new families that have enrolled over the past few weeks. We look forward to working with you in partnership to provide a positive educational experience.
Last week we had our annual book week parade. Congratulations to all of the parents that organised amazing costumes. It was wonderful to see so many staff and students dressed up and celebrating some of their favourite book characters.
This Tuesday there was an Indigenous Language excursion to Harding’s Paddock at Purga. Students were involved in a cultural tour and were identifying trees in traditional language. They were guided by Aunty Lareena and Uncle Henry. I would like to thank Aunty Marly for organising this experience for our students.
For the first time ever Leichhardt State School has been involved in Wakakirri. Wakakirri is an Australian national Story-Dance festival for primary and Secondary schools that has been running since 1992. Wakakirri is a word from the Aboriginal Wangaaypuwan people meaning "to dance". The name was chosen at the inception of the event in 1992 to give it a uniquely Australian context and feeling. Students have worked tirelessly over the past months learning dances and perfecting moves. Recording was done last Thursday and editing of the performance is still happening. We can't wait to see the final performance. Great work to all students and staff involved.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Book Week @ Leichhardt State School
Last week, Leichhardt celebrated Book Week! Thank you parents and carers for your supporting this event. Students love dressing up as their favourite character. To help some students finalise costumes for the Annual Book Week parade, Mrs Chant facilitated mask making in the library at play time. Thank you, Mrs Chant!
Thank you, Drumline!
The drummers did an amazing job at the Book Week Parade on Friday. The drumline drummed each class onto the stage so students could show their wonderful costumes. Drumline also did an amazing job supporting students to leave the Hall smartly during the dismissal phase of the parade. Thank you, Mr Schilling, for all your work with our Instrumental students!
Dymocks Children’s Charities Library Regeneration Program
Last week students also started to enjoy the $10 000 worth of new books that the Leichhardt State School library has received through the Dymocks Children’s Charities Library Regeneration program.
Here are just some of the books that have been provided through this program! Thank you, Dymocks Children’s Charities!
Faith Lutheran College Service Team Students are back at Leichhardt!
It is great to have the Faith students back for another term of individual reading engagement with our students. This term the Faith students are engaging in one on one reading with Year 2, 3 and 4 students. Leichhardt students thoroughly enjoy the ‘high schoolers’ visiting and enjoy this special reading time. Thank you, Faith!
2024 Preps at Leichhardt’s Book Week Parade!
It was wonderful to have three of our 2024 Preps join us for our annual Book Week Parade in the Hall on Friday of Week 7.
Deekyn, Charlie and Lexii (left to right), looked amazing in their Book Week costumes!
If you have a child who will be starting Prep in 2024, please contact the Office to organise an enrolment meeting and book in for the Prep Orientation Mornings in Term 4.
From Our Head of Department - Teaching and Learning
Our students have been busy finalising assessments, and it has been fantastic to see the pride in their learning. We have a new resource that Senior Students have been learning to use which aims to encourage them to add to their notes and edit their work. This is a really important skill to ensure their work is at a high quality and they haven't missed any key information.
We continue to have the conversations with our students about being prepared and organised for their learning. Having their equipment ready for their lessons is essential for being ready to learn as well as showing both themselves and their teachers respect. Please assist us in reminding your students to have a pencil and rubber prepared and encourage them to be in the habit of organising their belongings and equipment for school.

Community Garden
Our Indigenous Garden is looking great thanks to our gardeners and the little bit of rain yesterday helped pulling the weeds out a little easier.
Prep 2024
From Our Teachers
Year 1
Year 1 loved their visit to the library this week. They had a great time looking at the new books on the shelf, choosing a book of their choice and then listening to a story read by Miss O'Connor. They then had some great discussions about their favourite part of the story and why!
Please remember to keep encouraging your students to read and write each day. This could be through Reading Eggs which we strongly encourage. Year 1 are getting very clever at logging in and I am sure would love to show you!
Year 2
Aunty Sharon visited our school and Year 2's were lucky enough to have a song and dance with her.
Year 5
Year 5 Science have been working hard on showing their understanding of the Solar System. They enjoyed a lesson from Aunty Marly to learn about First Nations Astronomy and there were some wonderful discussions and learnings. The students were excited to put this information into a 'One Pager' and have been working hard to show their knowledge.
