Reading with the Kindy Kids Elective @ Leichhardt
Monday’s assembly celebrated the students who have participated in the Term 4 Reading with the Kindy Kids Elective. These students, with Mrs Rogers and Ms Emma, have attended the day care across the road from the school, every Wednesday and Friday afternoon ,during the elective session, to share their love of reading with the kindy students. The kindy students drew pictures for the students to thank them for visiting and reading to them this term. Thank you, students! Below are just some of the students who participated in the elective this term.
Showcase Assembly @ Leichhardt
On Monday, students from Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 shared their learning across different curriculum areas throughout the term and year. The Year 4 students’ description of the analysis of the Lewis Carroll poem, ‘Jabberwocky’ was very detailed! and most impressive! The Year 1s proudly shared their learning across the year and the Year 5s shared their learning across Tech, The Arts and English. The Year 5s sharing culminated in a performance of ‘I am Australian’ which linked beautifully to the work on their ‘I am’ poetry throughout Term 4. A big ‘Thank you’ to Tanna, in Year 3, who accompanied the Year 5 students on the digeridoo.
Dymocks Books @ Leichhardt
On Monday, as part of the Dymocks Children’s Charities Program, each student at Leichhardt State School received a book to take home to keep. Students across the school were very excited to receive the book that they had selected from the Dymocks catalogue earlier in the term.
A big ‘thank you’ to Ms Carolin (pictured below) for the logistics around ensuring that every student received the book of their choice on Monday! Well done, Ms Carolin!
Reading @ Leichhardt
During this term, at 8:00am each morning, Leichhardt State School has offered Before School Reading for students who wished to practise their reading and writing before the school day commences. Below are pictured Year 4 students, Annie and Madison, reading with Miss Alex (teacher aide). Well done, students and ‘thank you’, Miss Alex!

From Our Head of Department - Teaching and Learning
This fortnight I had the pleasure of attending the AVID Summer Institute conference in Melbourne with Ms Everingham and Mrs Bogicevic. It was great to connect with schools from across Australia and have the opportunity to learn more pedagogy strategies that we can adapt to our Leichhardt context. We were all filled with so much pride as Hayley confidently shared her speech with the conference room about what inspires her to learn. It was a fantastic opportunity for Hayley to travel and see the University of Melbourne as well as showcase Leichhardt.
I am so proud of the Bookwork Expectations and organisation that our students continued to develop in 2023. It has been wonderful working with classes to assist students and staff achieving their goals again this year. In 2024, we look forward to continuing to build on organisation and bookwork expectations, particularly in our senior classes and we are excited to link and develop skills in the 8 Ways Pedagogy in our junior years. This as well as continuing to celebrate learning in a number of ways!
To assist your child's organisation in Years 5-6 we strongly encourage that they come to school prepared with a school bag, pencil case, eraser, ruler, pencils and high lighters, as per their booklist. This will be extremely important as they transition between classrooms and teachers. Please continue to stay up to date via our schools Facebook page and emails. Thank you for your support in 2023, I look forward to a wonderful 2024!
From Our Community Support Coordinator
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all. I'd like to give a massive shout out to all the organisations that have supported our school this year. Without their help, we would not have been able to feed students a healthy lunch when they had forgotten theirs and bought new ipads for technology. We have been given supplies for our garden projects, which has allowed us to create our beautiful school gardens. These organisations have supported our school and students in so many different ways. So a BIG THANK YOU to them all!!
Congratulations to Hailey and Madison on being presented awards from the CWA. Well done girls.
Mind Body Character Day - 8 December 2023
To celebrate the end of the year, students and staff participated in a fun filled day of activites and concluded the day with the Summer Talent Show.
From Our Teachers
Year 1
Year 1 finished off the year by working on social skills and celebrating the wonderful learning they have achieved. Here they are building mini characters and as you can see were helping each other in such a beautiful manner. They also worked together to create some great chalk drawings! We are so proud of Year 1 this year and encourage them to continue to read and write each day of the school holidays so they are prepared for Year 2. Year 1, thank you for such a fantastic 2023!
Year 2
Year 2 students have been making healthy sandwiches that has linked with Technology. We visited Aunty Marly at the Deadly Room and yarned about Turtles and how they live. Students got to decorate a turtle too.
Year 5
Year 5 worked hard on their transition by preparing for their new classes and final year of primary school. They had some great discussions about reflecting on the year and setting new intentions. Year 5 then brainstormed the values that were important to them and that they wish to show in 2024 as well as how they want to feel as an individual and class group. They then did a gallery walk to see the other groups ideas and narrow down what values/intentions they wish to focus on in 6A, 2024. Well done, Year 5, for wonderful transition days. Bring on continuing to aim high and reach our values and intentions in 2024!
Year 6
Thank you to our Year 6 families for a wonderful night celebrating our Class of 2023 Year 6 graduates. Congratulations!
School Watch
With the school holidays starting on Friday 8th December, empty schools provide an opportunity for criminal activity – becoming targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage offences.
All of these have the potential to delay the new school year starting off.
The School Watch Program is a partnership between the Department of Education and the Queensland Police Service (Protective Services).
The program aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools.
If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Instead, call the School Watch number of 13 17 88. If you see a crime in progress, please call Triple Zero (000).
Let’s all work together to help create safer school communities and ensure children get off to a great new year of learning.
