From the Community
From the Principal
Thank you for a wonderful first term of the year! We appreciate your support, respect, patience and positivity as we try hard to provide the best educational opportunities for our students.
Term 1 Parent Information Afternoon was held yesterday at the Hall with the generous support of our P&C. We are grateful for everyone’s time after school to cook sausages and sell drinks from the Tuckshop.
The event was a great opportunity to share key information and celebrations with our parents and carers, and seek their feedback on what we appreciate about our school, what we could do better together and what we are grateful for as a community. We also shared Parent and Community Code of Conduct and talked about the importance of showing respect in our communication to maintain a positive school culture.
We look forward to organising one of these events each term, and we hope that more of our parents will be able to join us. We will make sure the afternoon sessions are booked on Homework Centre days, so the students can be supervised by our support staff.
More information about the Parent Information Session will be sent to parents and carers in an email, as well as the opportunity to provide us with feedback.
We are grateful for being part of this great school and Leichhardt community and look forward to bigger and better things next term. I wish you safe, relaxing and enjoyable holidays!
From the Deputy Principal
Parent Teacher Interviews @ Leichhardt

Weekly Attendance at Leichhardt
Each week we celebrate the previous week’s class attendance with the Lion Awards. For the past eight consecutive weeks, 4A has won the Senior Lion with their consistently impressive attendance percentage! Amazing! In fact, their attendance last week was their personal best at, 93.33%! Well done, 4A!
The Junior Lion award was taken out by a different class this week. For the last six weeks, 3B has dominated this in this area. However, this week, the cuddly trophy was taken out by Prep B, with a weekly attendance average of 84.35% Below is Kallie (Prep B) proudly accepting the Junior Lion award for Prep B’s attendance achievement.
Attendance Celebration @ Leichhardt!
100 Days of Prep Celebration!
Just a reminder that on Monday 15, July 2024, Leichhardt State School will be celebrating ‘100 Days of Prep’ at a special Prep badging parade (Paw Parade) on Monday 15 July, 2024 in the Hall.
If your Prep has missed days at school due to illness, please let Ms Ferguson (Student Reception Office) know so that your child can still be on track for receiving their ‘100 Days of Prep’ Paw badge!
Reading @ Leichhardt
By the end of this week, the Preps will have met the following letters and their corresponding sounds: s a t i m n o p b c. They can read and write more and more two and three letter words consisting of these letters. At the Week 9 Assembly the below pictured Prep students showed off their amazing literacy skills!
Roman demonstrated to the audience how to segment and blend words with three sounds. Excellent work, Roman!
Annita and Kingsley (Prep B) confidently demonstrated reading and spelling of words with three sounds. Well done, students!
Please contact your child’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s reading and writing progress.
Head of Department - Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning
It has been a very busy start to the year where students have been learning routines, expectations and getting to know their peers and staff members. Students have been busy learning how to 'S' Set up their notes by ruling a margin, writing the date and next term will continue to build on this.
We strongly encourage and teach students from Prep through to Year 6 the importance of lifelong learning including organisation. This not only includes their learning equipment and books but also students' belongings. Well done to the many students being ready to learn by having their pencil case, pencil, eraser and ruler. We are so proud of the pride taken in both bookwork and learning and look forward to celebrating this even more throughout the year.
As my time at Leichhardt comes to an end, I would like to extend my gratitude to you, Leichhardt community. It has been a pleasure to work alongside you and watch your children grow and learn each and every day. It truly is the most rewarding job and I feel so lucky to have shared so many years at Leichhardt. Thank you.
Leadership conference
Congratulations to the students that attended the Leadership Conference in Brisbane on Wednesday. They actively participated, had many wonderful discussions and enjoyed the day listening to empowering speakers and meeting students from other schools. What a fantastic job they did representing Leichhardt!
Head of Special Education
What an amazing term of learning! Just a reminder that if you require letters or surveys completed by the school team, please fill out a Request for External Agencies, found at the Office. We kindly ask that you give our team at least 2 weeks notice to complete these requests. I hope that you all have a lovely Easter break and I look forward to seeing you all next term.
From the Community Support Coordinator
Community Support Coordinator
As we wrap up this term, I want to take a moment to express my thanks to the parents who have communicated with me. I appreciate your patience and kindness when speaking with and working together to support your children.
In Term 2 I would like us to recognise the significance of consistent attendance in school. Attending regularly not only ensures that your child benefits fully from the material covered but also contributes to a positive and engaging learning environment for everyone involved.
I understand that there may be circumstances that arise unexpectedly, making attendance difficult at times. If you're facing challenges that impact your ability to attend, please don't hesitate to reach out to discuss potential solutions or accommodations.
Moving forward, let's all make a concerted effort to prioritise attendance and be proactive in communicating any issues or concerns. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels supported and motivated to participate fully.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and let's work together to ensure that attendance improves for the benefit of all.
Let's use this time to rest and recharge, celebrating our achievements and preparing for the next term ahead. Remember to take care of yourselves and each other.
Thank You
A very big Thanks to all the people in our community that have supported us. The P&C, Andrea in admin, Pastor Rob at Beacon, Pick of the Crop, Salvation Army, One Box, Warren the Bread Man, Mission Australia, the Smith Family, Miss Carolin, Rotary, Eat Up, YMCA, Bunnings, Breakfast Club Volunteers and to all the staff who go above and beyond each and every day to support Leichhardt State School.

Bremer Day of Excellence
On Tuesday, 5/6 students went to check out Bremer’s new Academic Excellence Program Project Leo. The students were greeted by year 7 deputy Mr Cowley and Year 12 science extention students at the front gate and taken to G Block, which is where the Science Labs are located. We got to do lots of fun science activities with the senior students and learned lots about cells, DNA, our body and how certain organs work and investigated mini beasts and our finger prints. We looked at interesting things under the microscope and made our own cell petri dish out of jelly and lollies! It was a great day- we learned lots, had fun and got a first glimpse at High School. We even ran into some Leichhardt graduates from last year! The only disappointing thing is that we didn’t get to blow anything up, maybe next time!
Bremer State High School will run more of these Experience Days for prospective students with higher academic abilities. Project Leo, which replaces The Bremer Science Extention Program (BSEP) in 2025, will have approximately 50 places and students need to pass an entrance exam which will take place sometime in term 3 this year. Orientation Day for all year 6 students heading to Bremer in 2025 will be held in Week 10, Term 4. Make sure you submit an expression of interest for enrolment as soon as possible, so you do not miss out on important information and events!
Instrumental Music Program
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your continued support of the Instrumental Music Program. Our students have enjoyed the beginning of the year with many of them starting their journey in instrumental music on a new instrument.
A reminder that there will be no instrumental music lessons in the first week of Term 2. Lessons will resume as normal Week 2 Term 2.
Mr Nathan Schilling
From the Teachers
Prep A
Prep A have been busy having a go at putting their sounds together to make words! Lexi is learning the number 8. Prep A also had a visit from 3A who performed and showed off their music skills!
Prep B
Our Preps have started off the school year with incredible enthusiasm and progress. Witnessing their growth since the start of the year has been truly remarkable. Each one of them shines like a superstar as they skilfully blend sounds to form words. They have also made great progress making connections between number names, numerals and quantities up to 10. Watching Number Blocks is definitely a highlight of each day.
Their sense of pride in their portfolio of work is well-deserved. As the school holidays approach, we invite you to take a moment to look through your child’s portfolio and engage in discussions about the all the things they've been exploring and learning about. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their achievements and encourage their continued curiosity and passion for learning.
We wish you all a very happy and safe Easter break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.
Year 1
1B has been extending their writing skills over the past week by participating in a weekly Writer’s workshop. Each Thursday or Friday, the student look at a picture or a short video and then write about something they have learnt or found interesting. The aim of Writer’s workshop is to increase each student’s individual writing stamina and ability. The students have 3 rules:
1: We focus on how the word sounds instead of worrying about correct spelling (we can fix this later).
2: We use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
3: We have fun and do our best.
We started this activity at the beginning of the year and all students have made huge progress with their writing! I am excited to see how we go in term 2.
Have a wonderful and restful Easter break,
Mrs Krings
Finishing the term strong @ Leichhardt
Even though assessment is complete, students used the remaining days of Week 10 to consolidate learning. Year 5 worked on perfecting punctuation using speech marks. Year 6 worked on fine tuning times tables.
Year 5 Math
Year 5 have been busy learning about and understanding data. They have had some great discussions about the trends of graphs and the reasonings for this. They are preparing to create their own questions to gain information about the Year 5's sun safety.
Mind, Body and Character Day
For the last day of term, our students get to enjoy a day full of mindfulness and movement to celebrate their hard work and achievement. We love seeing our students flourish in these environments and the different roles they take on.
