Volume 14- 2nd September 2021
From the Principal
Welcome to another edition of Leichhardt State School’s newsletter!
Celebrating Success
2021 preliminary NAPLAN data has come out in the last couple of weeks and our students have shown a great improvement in Reading, especially in Year 3. We have over 90% of students at or above the National Minimum Standard, which is fantastic! Our indigenous students have performed better than ever and we contribute this success to the great work that happens in our Deadly Room, under the guidance of our Indigenous Community Coordinator, Aunty Marly Hooper. Naturally, the true legends are our kids who work hard every day to be the best learners they can be.
Teaching and Learning
At Leichhardt State School, we proudly make learning our key business every moment of every day. Over the last couple of weeks, our focus has been on students completing assessment in preparation for reporting at end of Term 3. If your child has been away, please make contact with the teacher to discuss how you can enable your child to complete assessment either at home or at school. Completing assessment to the best of students’ ability is extremely important because it not only shows a child’s learning, it also shows their resilience and persistence. If you need any tips on how to support your child to complete assessment, please contact the teacher.
Facilities Update
On Friday 10 September 2021, we will start the refurbishing of the basketball courts to provide more opportunities for our students to engage in different sports. We are also looking at upgrading other facilities in the school by the end of the year, including the Gathering Place outside E block and a new electronic sign near the Front Gate.
Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy reading our newsletter!

Learning @ Leichhardt
This term in Prep B we have been learning about the weather. We have learnt about hot and cold weather, rainy and windy weather just to name a few. We have always discussed what activities we can do in all kinds of weather and what cloths we need to wear. Today we made a wind ornament to measure the wind speed – if there is no wind, a breeze or strong wind. We had lots of fun building our ornaments and then experimenting with them.
This week the Year 4's had a Writing Workshop with Dr Cameron. Had lessions in the Technology room and practiced their reading. Reading is everywhere. It is is Week 8 we have enjoyed Book Week, book Challenge, Indigenous Literacy Week and visits from authors. Thank you to Mrs Finlay.
4B
To consolidate our learning of decimals we participated in an outdoor maths activity. Students enthusiastically completed questions that had been placed around the outdoor area. They were very proud of themselves for completing them quickly and accurately. 4B created their own teams during the activity. It was great to see the students working together so respectfully!
The past two weeks the students in year 5 and 6 have been working on the Science assessments. The year 5 students have made models of the Solar System and researched planets in the Solar System. The year 6 students have designed a model that requires a circuit and explained how their circuit transfers and transforms energy.
In Dance we are continuing to learn more about the elements of dance. This week students explored the difference between locomotor and non-locomotor dance moves. Here students in 3B are practicing some non-locomotor dance skills (dancing in the one spot).
For Technology in Year 5 and 6, the students have started their Oz Harvest food technology lessons. They prepared French toast and made banana pancakes. Staff and students have enjoyed their delicious cooking.
Mission Australia Play group
Over the past 2 weeks we have been getting ready for Father’s Day by making cards, posters & creating shapes from salt dough.
We had a visit from the Ipswich Library’s First 5 Forever program last week which was lots of fun discovering animals, singing a song using Auslan signs and reading an Indigenous story about Australian animals.
There are 2 weeks left before the holidays where we will continue with Dinosaurs.
Next term we will be discovering & learning about different countries & cultures.
Have a great week everyone.
