Volume 6 - 26 April 2024
From The Principal
Leichhardt State School’s values, Gratitude, Respect, Teamwork and Perseverance, clearly define what is important to our school community – what we believe in and what guides our attitudes and behaviours. Our school has a weekly focus on one of the values and it is explicitly taught in our classrooms. In staff meetings, we reflect on how our values shape our thinking and actions on a daily basis. We remind our students to think about what we value when making choices about their behaviour. Clear values help us understand why we do something and how we do it.
At the Parent Information Afternoon in the last week of Term 1, we discussed the importance of always thinking back to what we value as parents and educators. Not surprisingly, our parents’ comments and questions showed us the value they place on education of our students. We are grateful for this support and would not be able to do our job well without the support of our community. Thank you. We also discussed the Parent Code of Conduct and the expectations of parents’ and carers’ behaviour at school. I will share all this with you in an email and send you some questions to respond to, if you have not had a chance to join us at the Information Afternoon.
The last couple of weeks saw our students re-engage well with learning after the holidays. I met with Student Leaders last week and their feedback was very positive. They are excited about the opportunities they have to participate in more sports and grateful for their new teachers.
Many thanks to our families who joined us for the ANZAC Day Ceremony on Wednesday and who found time to support our students yesterday at ANZAC Day Service at Leichhardt Park. Our former teacher, Kasey Curwen, encouraged our students to join the choir as they sang the national anthems. We are grateful for this opportunity and that Ms Curwen is still there to support our students – once a Leichhardt Legend, always a Leichhardt Legend.

Head Of Department - Teaching And Learning
Hello! My name is Miss Everingham. This term I have stepped into the role of Head of Department – Teaching and Learning. I have been at Leichhardt State School for six years teaching various subjects and year levels. I am excited to work with our staff, parents/carers, and students to build capacity in the following: getting ready for high school; assisting with behaviour strategies individually and whole-class; and implementing student-centred pedagogical approaches, just to name a few.
We have had a fantastic start to Term 2! I would like to thank our teachers for everything they do in supporting their students getting back into their classroom routines after the Easter break. This includes: lining up sensibly after an eating or play break, including the date in their bookwork, and writing their notes in a neat manner. Students also enjoy engaging with a laptop or iPad to complete various learning activities.
Each week at Leichhardt, a school specific value and expectation are focused on for explicit instruction. Week 1, students focused on listening to their teachers’ instructions and respecting other students’ property. Week 2, students focused on being grateful for the opportunity to learn new things each day. We also showed gratitude during our ANZAC Ceremony. Each class made a class wreath and teachers selected two class representatives to lay the wreath during the ceremony. Class representatives did a fantastic job and were very respectful during the ceremony. We were very proud of all of our students who demonstrated impeccable behaviour at the special assembly.
Students are encouraged to use the ‘High Five’ when needed. This is reviewed every assembly as well as in class and in the playground, in order to support our students in making good behaviour choices.
ANZAC Day
We were very grateful to have the following special guests attend our ANZAC Day service: Brooke Lavaring, Flying Officer 2 RAAF Base Amberley, Darren Zanow, State Member for Ipswich West, Cate Oliver, representing the Hon Shayne Neumann MP, Federal Member for Blair, and Aunty Larena Thompson

Leichhardt State School needs some parents to help at Breakfast Club.
Time: 7:45 – 8:45am
We need someone to run Breakfast Club Monday and Tuesday morning.
Wednesday to Friday could use an assistant.
Duties include making the toast and putting the spreads on, pouring milk into cups, serving cereal and cleaning up.
Breakfast is made up in the tuck shop and then transported next to student services and served there. The items go into a trolley and transported there and back.
Blue card is required. If you don’t have a blue card the P & C will help you get a volunteer card.
Please, if you have some time available at that time of the morning, we really could use your help!
Soccer Program with Mr Scott
Round 1
We are thrilled to announce the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our school's sports legacy: the formation of the Leichhardt Girls and Boys Soccer Team! With passion, dedication, and a shared love for the beautiful game, a group of talented students has united to represent our school on the soccer pitch.
With a combination of experienced players and fresh talent, we are ready to showcase our skills and sportsmanship on the field. But our team is about more than just competition; it's about camaraderie, teamwork, and personal growth. Through hard work, discipline, and mutual support, we aim to not only excel in matches but also to build lasting friendships and character that extend beyond the soccer field.
These values clearly demonstrated in our first fixture against St Mary's before the Easter break. We play our second fixture this Friday 19th against Blair State school where we are excited to get our second game under our belts. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming matches.
Round 2
Amazing news! Both girls and boys soccer teams scored their first win against Blair State School in Round 2! 🎉⚽️ Way to go, team! Let's keep up the great work and aim for more victories ahead! Our next match is today against Rosewood State School. Let's keep the momentum going! Hopefully, the students continue to enjoy playing and we can secure another win. Go team Leichhardt ! 💪⚽️.
Instrumental Music Program
Instrumental Music lessons start back next week!!
From the Teachers
Prep
It is wonderful to witness the return of all our prep students to school, filled with excitement for learning. They've diligently revisited the sounds and numbers introduced in Term One, further enriching their knowledge by delving into the sounds 'b' and 'c', and learning numbers 7 and 8. This term, our preps are embarking on the journey of sentence writing. They've been working on using capital letters to commence sentences and punctuating them with full stops. Using 'finger spacers,' they've been skillfully creating spaces between words.
Our Preps participated in their very first school ANZAC Day service. Their exemplary behaviour and ability to follow instructions left everyone very impressed and proud. Well done, Preps!
Parents, please remember to engage in discussions with your child about their school experiences, as this greatly aids in reinforcing their learning.
Year 1
In Maths this week, 1B have been learning about partitioning one and two digit numbers. The students have used MAB blocks, unifix cubes and paddle popsticks to divide numbers between 2 and 3 cups. This helped the students visualise breaking items apart.
Year 4
Year 4 were investigating erosion and how land surface can be broken down and carried away by the wind and water.
Electives
Japanese
This Term in Japanese Sensei Jack has been teaching us how to count, say greetings and much much more. At the end of the day he lets us watch a movie, which is a fun and engaging way to pick up the language.
