From The Principal
From Monday 27 May until Thursday 30 May, our school is partaking in the School Review process. This process is intended to provide us with information on what we are doing well and what our next steps are when it comes to teaching and learning. The reviewers’ job is to talk to as many people as possible to understand how things are running at our school, to highlight our positives and find opportunities for us to do better in other areas. As parents, you may receive phone calls or be approached near the gate or in the Outdoor Learning Area to have a chat to one of the reviewers. I thank you in advance for sharing your perspective.
As part of our Annual Implementation Plan for 2024, we identified establishment of a multi-tiered system of support as one of our key priorities. The system is framed within Positive Behaviour for Learning philosophy, and is designed to assist all our students to make good choices when it comes to behaviour and conduct at school. The first layer in the system are our Universals – the whole-school expectations of Being Kind, Being Safe and Being Learners. To celebrate our students’ good choices in behaviour, we use Gotchas and explicitly state what behaviour is being celebrated.
This term, we have started a review process of the Gotcha system and are consulting with students and staff on what we want this to look like. Our students have had some wonderful ideas already. For example, instead of having a raffle draw system, they would like to collect and save their Gotchas to exchange for a bigger award. In my meeting with Student Leaders this week, I found out that getting a rugby ball would be valued 100 Gotchas, and 10min on an iPad only 60 Gotchas. I love getting students’ perspective on our awards system.
I would like to use this opportunity to ask you to email me on mbogi4@eq.edu.au if you have any ideas for the awards system. What works for your family? What do your children value? Research shows that when home and school share some of their behaviour approaches and awards systems, students are much more likely to be successful. Thank you in advance.
This week, we were successful in recruiting Mr Max Banditt as the Support Worker and NRL coach for our students in the Lean into Learning Program. Mr Max, as he is known to the students, will be working closely with our HPE teachers and Ms McQueen to deliver programs that will enhance our students’ fitness, rugby skills and social and emotional development.

PBL News
I would like to thank our families for partnering with us around Positive Behaviour for Learning. The Department of Education has outlined the benefits for students of family-school engagement including: improved academic outcomes, stronger relationships with adults and peers, better social skills; and improved mental health. When families and schools work together to reinforce positive behaviours, students benefit from clear expectations and consistent reinforcement both at home and in school. This collaboration helps to create a cohesive approach to behaviour management, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for students' well-being and success.
If you would like any more information regarding PBL in practice, family engagement. Please visit this link https://behaviour.education.qld.gov.au/supportingStudentBehaviour/PositiveBehaviourforLearning/Documents/pbl-in-practice-family-engagement.pdf
Students are encouraged to use the ‘High Five’ when needed. This is reviewed every assembly as well as in class and in the playground, in order to support our students in making good behaviour choices.
Week 5, students made ‘thank you’ cards for our volunteers. Thank you, to our volunteers that spend countless hours with our students to assist them with reading, writing, making tuckshop orders, assisting with administration duties and dropping off fruit, we are grateful for you!
Week 6, students have been discussing how we can work as a team, to keep school and personal property safe. This includes storing and charging our devices and placing our school bags in a neat manner.

Their dedication and generosity deserve a heartfelt thank you for all they do to enhance the educational experience for everyone involved.

From The Teachers
Prep
The Preppies have been busy learning to read new words related to the sounds they have been learning. They have also been learning to write simple sentences with some irregular words, including 'the,' 'a,' and 'I.' They thought the sentence 'The cat sat on the dog' was hilarious! It would be great if you could help them practise blending and writing words using the sounds we have been exploring (s, a, t, i, m, n, o, p, b, c, g, h, d, and e). Some examples include dad, bad, mad, mat, bit, pin, pit, and bed.
In Mathematics, we have been counting objects from 0-10 and adding numbers together. We have also been learning the days of the week and what things we would normally do on each day. For example, on Monday we go to school, have assembly, and visit the library. On Tuesday, we go to school and have HPE with Mr. Woody.
Our Vet Corner continues to be very popular. It is wonderful to see the students using their writing skills to write appointment times for the different animals. They are also learning about what we need to care for our animals (food, water, toys, bedding)
Year 2
In Year 2, we’re diving into the fascinating world of life cycles by exploring butterflies. This term, our classrooms have been buzzing with excitement as we care for chrysalis’ and watch them transform through a process called ‘metamorphosis.’
The highlight of our project was when one of our chrysalis’ turned into a butterfly, which we named ‘Sasha.’ Watching Sasha emerge and grow stronger was amazing. We released Sasha back into nature, where it can help pollinate flowers and continue its life cycle.
Our students have shown great care and attention to the butterflies and chrysalis’. This hands-on learning has captured their interest and linked perfectly with our English lessons, where they’re writing Information Reports about butterflies.
Through this project, students are learning about life cycles, the environment, and the important role of pollinators. We’re proud of their curiosity and dedication to learning in a hands-on way.
Year 3
This week, Year 3 had the exciting chance to visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Fig Tree Pocket. The students were extremely excited for the bus journey itself, then were over the moon when reaching our destination and seeing a Koala. Year 3 has been learning about living vs non-living things in Science and doing animal information reports in English, so being at Lone Pine enabled them to get hands on experience around their learning. The students visited koalas, snakes, dingoes, crocodiles, a platypus and so much more. They were extremely lucky to be able to feed the multiple kangaroos living at Lone Pine. Definitely a highlight of the day. The kids took part in a backyard discovery lesson where they were provided clues and had to map together what animal the clues hinted at. The classes had a great time sharing the knowledge they have gathered over the term and be able to meet the animals they have been so keenly learning about.
Year 5
This week in 5A our learning focus of the week has been about how we can use teamwork to keep school and personal property safe.
Year 5 HASS
The past fortnight students in year five Humanities and Social Sciences have been working hard on their assessment. Students were required to write a letter to Queen Victoria regarding the need for Queensland to become an independent colony.
Year 5 Maths
Last week, students in Year 5 conducted a statistical investigation during a Mathematics lesson. Students have been discussing how they can stay safe in the sun. They voted on ‘how often are hats worn in 5A?’. As shown on the graph created by a student, nearly half of the class that was present that day, did not have a hat to wear. We encourage all students to be sun safe and wear a hat whilst playing out in the sun.
Students in Year 5 also understand that even though they may not have a hat, there are other ways to stay safe in the sun. The graph below shows many students know that they can play in the shade or under a building.
From The Deadly Room
Congratulations to Jahnarrah (6B) and Leonee (5B) who had the honour of Presenting the Welcome to Country in Yagara language at the 2024 Principals Conference. This significant event underscores the school's commitment to cultural education and the recognition of Indigenous heritage.
Leichhardt State School continues to lead by example in promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity within the educational community. The students' involvement in such a significant ceremony reflects the school's ongoing efforts to foster a respectful and inclusive environment for all.
As a reward for all their hard work and commitment the girls enjoyed visiting QAGOMA and looking at the Indigenous artwork displayed.
At Leichhardt State School, the Deadly Room has become a vibrant hub of cultural learning and performing, playing a pivotal role in the education and engagement of students. This dedicated space is integral to the school's efforts to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture among its students.

CPR Awareness Sessions
Ipswich City Council offer free CPR awareness sessions for kids and adults to help teach them life-saving skills. A young child is four times more likely to survive a near drowning if parents/guardians or bystanders know CPR and it is performed immediately.
A child or toddler can drown within 20 seconds, in as little as 50mm of water. A child drowning is silent. Knowing the basics of CPR could help save a life
CPR Awareness Sessions have been designed for adults aged 18+ years and children aged 5-12 years (however children over 12 are welcome to enrol in the children’s program):
- Each session runs for one hour and is delivered by Queensland Ambulance Service
- Bookings are essential as places are limited
- Note that these sessions do not provide a CPR qualification upon completion.
