Volume 10 - 21 June
From The Principal
After over four years as Principal of Leichhardt State School, it is time for me to leave our beautiful community. I am grateful to our parents, carers and the wider community for accepting me so warmly and working collaboratively with me on identifying our values, needs, challenges, aspirations and dreams. Together, we built on Leichhardt’s past successes and strengthened our connections for the future.
Many times over the years, I have written about how lucky I felt to have the opportunity to educate your children, our students. I have always been impressed by their friendly nature, curiosity, perseverance and honesty. Multiple visitors to our school comment about how warmly our students welcome them to school, how helpful they are and how confidently they present. I look forward to hearing success stories about our students in the years to come.
Leichhardt State School Principal from Semester 2 will be Andrew Goldie, who is coming to us from Durack State School. Andrew visited our school this morning and met a number of staff and students. He is really excited about the opportunity to join our community and help Leichhardt continue to improve and reach new goals in the future.
One of those goals is our Prep Playground build, which is now nearing the final stages of approval to construct. Nic Curwen will be sharing the construction process with the community via social media, in anticipation of the project being completed as soon as possible. Very exciting!
I am sure that Leichhardt will continue on its wonderful journey and continue to achieve bigger and better things through innovation, courage and passion for learning. As one of our parents said in their comment to the School Reviewers: ‘When you come to Leichhardt, you don’t only get a school, you get a family.’ I will remember these words forever.
Good luck and best wishes.

During the assessment period, our students have been working hard, persevering through their learning and assessments. It is fantastic to see the pride in their learning.

Students are encouraged to use the ‘High Five’ when needed. This is reviewed every assembly as well as in class and in the playground, in order to support our students in making good behaviour choices.
I would like to thank our families for partnering with us around Positive Behaviour for Learning. The Department of Education has outlined the benefits for students of family-school engagement including: improved academic outcomes, stronger relationships with adults and peers, better social skills; and improved mental health. When families and schools work together to reinforce positive behaviours, students benefit from clear expectations and consistent reinforcement both at home and in school. This collaboration helps to create a cohesive approach to behaviour management, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for students' well-being and success.

Leichhardt Girls and Seniors Finish Their First Soccer Season
It has been an incredible journey, and I couldn't be prouder of every student involved. Our senior team finished 3rd in the league with an outstanding record of 6 wins out of 9 games. The girls' team finished 4th in the league, achieving two impressive wins throughout the season—a remarkable feat considering it was the first time many of them had played soccer.
It has been a privilege to coach these talented students and witness their progress. I hope our Year 6 students continue to play soccer in high school, as we have some amazing talents among them.
To wrap up our soccer season, we held a Euro 2024 competition between the students. The pictures below show our girls' team winners, England (Red), and our boys' team winners, Germany (Yellow). It was a perfect way to end the season.
We look forward to next year and the start of the touch football season.

Prep A
In our English unit this term students were required to write an information text using words and images. As a class we decided our topic would be about a kangaroo.
We learned that pictures in both story books and information texts relate to the words and add meaning to the text.
We modelled sentences around what an animal ‘has’ and what it ‘does’. Some of the animals we looked at were bears, koalas, wombats and echidnas. We practised drawing a picture of the animal we were studying, labelling its different parts and writing a sentence to support our picture.
To celebrate our learning we decorated a kangaroo and her joey and added a sentence to display in our classroom.
Prep A Construction Masterpiece
Year 1
Year 1 enjoyed an excursion to Ipswich Littler Theatre's Pantomime production of 'Picnic in the Woods'. The students thoroughly enjoyed seeing all their favourite 'Bear' characters on stage. Although, for some, the bus trip was the highlight of the day!! Thank you to the ILT Daytime Troupe for inspiring the next generation of actors.
Year 2
In English, we focused on writing information reports. We tied this skill into our Science studies by researching Monarch Butterflies. The students poured their newfound knowledge into creating an impressive information ‘Big Book’ that showcases their hard work and creativity.
Science lessons this term took us through the fascinating life cycles of various creatures, with a special emphasis on Monarch Butterflies. We explored their transformation from egg to butterfly and compared their life cycle to other animals. The students were captivated by learning how scientists track these incredible insects during their migration.
In Maths, we delved into place value and learned how to manipulate larger numbers in the hundreds. Through hands-on materials and engaging games, the students gained confidence in working with big numbers. Additionally, we mastered the column method to tackle tricky maths problems, and the progress has been remarkable.
Our HASS lessons were an adventure around the world as we learned about our states and territories, as well as the continents and oceans. The students enjoyed mapping out these geographical features and understanding their importance.
In Media Arts, students learned about different camera angles and video editing techniques. They had a blast creating and editing their own videos, showcasing their creativity and new technical skills.
Thank you for your continued support. We’re proud of the students’ achievements this term and look forward to more exciting learning ahead!
