Volume 15 - 13 September 2024
From The Principal
Happy Holidays
As we wrap up Term 3, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this incredible journey. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been a part of the Leichhardt State School community for a whole term already! The experience has been truly enriching, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many of our students and families. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the staff for their unwavering support and dedication throughout this term. Your commitment to our community is genuinely appreciated and makes a significant difference in our students' lives. I am thrilled to continue being a part of this wonderful school community and look forward to the opportunities and experiences that lie ahead. As we head into the break, I hope everyone returns refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 4.
School attendance
Consistent school attendance is crucial for students’ success. When children miss school, they miss out on essential learning experiences and opportunities for growth. To help meet our target of 90% attendance and ensure that every child gets the most out of their education, please encourage your child to attend school every day they are able. Even if it seems like just a few days here and there, it adds up over time and can have a significant impact on their overall academic progress. Your support in making sure they are present and engaged is invaluable in helping them achieve their full potential. Thank you for being proactive and involved in your child’s education
School Strategic plan
Our school is in the process of developing our strategic plan for the next four years. Following the review conducted earlier this year, we have received valuable feedback that will guide our planning process.
As part of our commitment to creating a plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of our school community, we will be seeking your input next term. We believe that your insights and suggestions are crucial for ensuring our strategic plan is comprehensive and effective.
If you are interested in participating in this important process, please let us know. We will provide further details about how you can get involved in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school. Together, we can work towards a bright and successful future for our students.
Thank you
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable break! 😊

Report Cards and Parent-Teacher Interviews
This week, report cards were emailed home. These reports provide a valuable snapshot of your child’s progress, highlighting their strengths and areas for growth. We encourage you to review the report with your child and celebrate their achievements while discussing any goals for the upcoming term.
Earlier this week, Parent-Teacher Interview forms were sent home. Please note that Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Thursday, after school, in Week 3. This is a valuable opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, explore their progress in depth, and work together on strategies to support their ongoing learning journey.
To secure your preferred time, please ensure the Parent-Teacher Interview form is returned as soon as possible next term. If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to contact the school office.
We look forward to working together to support your child's continued success

How Has Your Child's School Attendance Been This Term?
As we approach the end of another term, it’s a great time to reflect on your child’s school attendance. Regular attendance is vital for their learning, social development, and overall academic success. Even occasional absences can disrupt their progress and impact their understanding of key concepts.
How Can You Support Consistent Attendance?
- Establish a Routine: Ensure your child has a consistent bedtime and morning routine to make school days smoother.
- Communicate with the School: If your child needs to miss school, inform their teacher and arrange to catch up on any missed work.
- Track Attendance: Regularly monitor your child’s attendance and discuss any concerns you may have with the school early.
Every day counts. Let’s work together to ensure your child makes the most of their learning opportunities in Term 4!
Thank you, Faith Lutheran College Service Team
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful high school students from Faith Lutheran College (FLC) who have been visiting us each week this term to read with our Prep students. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and kindness have made a significant impact on our young learners, fostering a love of reading and creating a positive learning experience.
Our Prep students look forward to the FLC student visits and the opportunity to share stories and laughter with their new reading buddies. The bonds they have built through these weekly sessions are truly inspiring.
We thank the students and staff from FLC for their time, effort, and commitment to supporting our Prep students on their reading journey. We look forward to continuing this valuable partnership in Term 4!
From The Head Of Teaching And Learning
We would like to acknowledge all the hard work our; students, teachers and families have contributed over the term. During the assessment period, our students have been working hard, persevering through their learning and it is fantastic to see the pride in their work. We would like to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday and we will see you in Term 4.
Positive Behaviour for Learning!
Week 9’s PBL focus was about; trialling a variety of strategies to persevere in your learning and to encourage others to do the same. Students were able to ask others if they need help and to check in to see how they are going with their work.
This week’s focus has been focusing on persevering and being a learner. Even though it is the last week of term, students have been using every opportunity to build on their skills in and out of the classroom.
Here are some actions and verbal responses you can speak with your student about;
- Raise your hand and asking your teacher for help “excuse me, can I please have some help?”, “what can I do to improve my work”
- Ask your friend for help
- Go to your learning wall or bump it up wall – bring your writing book to the wall and compare
- Take a drink break “excuse me, can I please have a drink break”

Year 5 and 6 reminders
To assist our Year 5 and 6 students for high school, students have been taking more responsibility for their supplies, such as their pencil case and ruler, between classes. Please remind your student to ensure their ruler, pencil case, complete with lead pencils and an eraser, are in their bag each morning before they leave for school. Thank you, Miss Greenwood, for creating our posters to remind students to organise their belongings.
With the warmer weather quickly approaching, we encourage all students to apply sun safety
- wear a broad-brim hat,
- apply sunscreen,
- have a water bottle and
- seek shade – under a building or tree
Students have continued working as a team, to keep school and personal property safe. This includes storing and charging our devices and placing our school bags in a neat manner.
High Five
Students are encouraged to use the ‘High Five’ when needed. This is reviewed every assembly as well as in class and in the playground, in order to support our students in making good behaviour choices.
I would like to thank our families for partnering with us around Positive Behaviour for Learning. The Department of Education has outlined the benefits for students of family-school engagement including improved academic outcomes, stronger relationships with adults and peers, better social skills; and improved mental health. When families and schools work together to reinforce positive behaviours, students benefit from clear expectations and consistent reinforcement both at home and in school. This collaboration helps to create a cohesive approach to behaviour management, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for students' well-being and success.

Students were tracked daily on their punctuality, safety, learning, and kindness. Points were awarded for each category, and students competed for a place on the leaderboard.
At the end of the programme, students with the highest points earned the first pick of the highly coveted soccer cards. All participants displayed amazing commitment, with many maxing out their points on most days.
The overall winner was Jumanne Mlondani from Grade 5, who earned top honours, and the other students celebrated his success. Afterward, the remaining students were able to select their prizes in order of their standings. Congratulations to Jumanne and all participants for their fantastic efforts!

Prep A
Prep A has been extremely busy consolidating their term 3 learning this week. We practiced our handwriting especially our letters j and u. We practiced writing using chalk in the OLA as well as on our whiteboards in the classroom. We are super excited for the holidays but can't wait to see what we are learning in term 4.
Year 2
Year 2 Excursion to Cooneana Heritage Centre
Last week, our Year 2 students had an exciting adventure at the Cooneana Heritage Centre as part of our HASS learning, where they stepped back in time to explore life in the past and learn about old technology. It was an incredible hands-on experience that brought history to life!
The students enjoyed rolling up their sleeves to scrub washing the old-fashioned way and took a tour of a heritage home to discover how people used to cook, clean, shop, and eat. One of the highlights was seeing how lawn mowers have changed over the years—from push mowers to electric, and finally to the power mowers we use today.
We also learned about what school was like in the past, with students trying their hand at writing on slates and seeing quills and inkwells up close. The experience gave them a real appreciation for how much life has changed with technology.
The bus ride was just as much fun, and the students returned to school full of stories and excitement from the day. It was a memorable experience, and we can’t wait for our next adventure!
