Volume 5 - 2 May 2025
From The Principal

Andrew Goldie - Principal
Welcome Back To Term 2
Welcome back! We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break. It’s wonderful to see our students return with bright smiles, ready for another great term of learning and growth.
Term 2 is set to be a busy one, with several important events coming up. One of the key highlights this term will be our Parent-Teacher Conferences. These are a valuable opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, discuss their progress, and work together to support their learning goals.
We’d also like to remind families about the importance of regular school attendance. Every school day counts! When children attend school consistently, they build strong routines, develop friendships, and continue progressing in their learning. Please support your child by ensuring they attend every day unless they are unwell.
Mark your calendars – School Photos will be taken on Tuesday, 6th May. Please ensure students are in full school uniform and ready to smile!
Don’t forget the Ipswich Show Holiday is coming up as well. It’s a great chance to enjoy time with family, but please remember there’s no school on that day.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the families who attended the ANZAC Day parade on Friday. It was truly moving to see our students and families proudly representing our school and showing their respect. Your presence was greatly appreciated.
Here’s to a fantastic Term 2 ahead!

From The Head Of Department - Student Engagement

Ms Everingham - HOD Student Engagement
Welcome to Term 2!
We’re excited to be back for another great term of learning and fun! It’s been wonderful seeing all the students return with big smiles and lots of energy. Just a quick reminder that there’s a public holiday on Monday, the 5th of May, so there will be no school that day. Also, school photo day is on Tuesday, the 6th of May, so please make sure students come dressed in their full school uniform and are looking their best! Envelopes have already been sent out and can be return on the day directly to the photographer or order online.
Please ensure students are wearing correct footwear to school and to keep them on their feet. This is for student safety. If you have any concerns, please let the school know. As the weather is cooling down, please ensure your child is wearing a jumper, preferably school colours and labelled.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic Term 2 filled with exciting learning, special events, and lots of great memories.

Sun Safety
As the warmer weather continues, it is important for all students to practice sun safety. Please encourage your child to:
- Wear a broad-brim hat to protect their face and neck.
- Apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day.
- Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
- Seek shade whenever possible, whether under a building or tree.
Let’s work together to keep our students safe and healthy in the sun

Best Class on Parade
We’re excited to continue the ‘Best Class on Parade’ Trophy! This award will go to the class that best demonstrates the SHELL behaviour during Parade and leaves the hall the quietest

Let’s all work together to enjoy ‘Best Class on Parade’ trophy by showing our best behaviour! The winning class will enjoy VIP seating at Parade the following week as a special reward—a fun and exciting perk for all the hard work!
Good luck to everyone!
Congratulations to: 2A and Mr Livingston

Practice Family Engagement
I would like to thank our families for partnering with us around Positive Behaviour for Learning. The Department of Education has outlined the benefits for students of family-school engagement including: improved academic outcomes, stronger relationships with adults and peers, better social skills; and improved mental health. When families and schools work together to reinforce positive behaviours, students benefit from clear expectations and consistent reinforcement both at home and in school. This collaboration helps to create a cohesive approach to behaviour management, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for students' well-being and success.

From The Head Of Special Education

Ms Rivett - HOSES
Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you all had a restful break and ready for a new term.
External Providers Requests
External providers can offer a valuable service in supporting individual students. Collaboration between the provider and school can result in more effective support for the student. As part of the external provider’s process of assessing need and supporting students, schools may be requested to provide information regarding a student’s current presentation, progress, functioning and support needs. Given that the information involved is often of a sensitive nature and can rely on specific administration protocols, Leichhardt State School adopts a best practice approach when responding to requests received from external providers. A Consent to Share will also be required to be signed before the school can speak to any external providers and can be found in the main office. To help us process requests efficiently, we kindly ask that the school be given at least two weeks' notice. We understand that urgent requests may occasionally arise, and we will do our best to accommodate them whenever possible.
The Requests for Information and Assessments for External Providers form can be located on the school website or paper copies can be found at the main office. When completing the request, please add the date of the appointment and the name of the specialist requesting this information.
NDIS Requests
Before an NDIS session can commence, the following steps below need to be completed initially. Once these have been completed, sessions can begin on the school site. Please remember that the school hosts the sessions and it is the provider and parents responsibility to share progress and session information to each other. The school is not informed of progress notes or session details. This year, due to room spaces, we will only be able to offer NDIS spaces 5 days a fortnight. If you require sessions to be completed on the school site, please complete a parent request as soon as possible.
Principals
- Consider and make the final decision about whether an NDIS provider can deliver supports funded through a student’s NDIS plan at school, during school time.
- Advise the parent of their decision, and the reasons for that decision if the request is not approved.
- Ensure the NDIS provider provides necessary documents.
- Sign, and ensure the parent and the NDIS provider sign, the Access agreement.
- Arrange for, and ensure NDIS providers and relevant staff attend mandatory training.
- Ensure the terms of the Access agreement are complied with by all parties including the school.
- Ensure the NDIS support is delivered in a location that can be observed and accessed by school staff at all times while the NDIS provider is delivering the support.
- Advise the parent/s if issues arise at the school that may impact on the ability for the support to be delivered at school, during school time including any changes.
- Advise the parent/s if considering terminating the Access agreement and discuss with the parent the reasons for terminating the Access agreement.
- Advise the parent/s and NDIS provider, in writing or email, if the principal decides to suspend or terminate access.
- Advise the parent/s and NDIS provider, in writing or email, if the duration of the Access agreement is extended.
Parents
- Provide a completed NDIS access request form requesting that a NDIS provider access the school, during school time to provide an NDIS support to their child.
- Provide all necessary information to the school to enable the principal to consider the request and make a decision.
- Enter into an Access agreement with the principal and the NDIS provider.
- Comply with the terms of the Access agreement.
- Advise the school of any changes to the support being provided or change of NDIS provider personnel providing the support in writing or email.
- Advise the NDIS provider of any changes to access arrangements at the school.
- If required, make a request that the duration of the Access agreement be extended, in writing or by email, to the school.
NDIS providers
- Enter into, and comply with, an Access agreement with the school and the parent.
- Provide all information and documentation to the school as required by the principal.
- Provide evidence to the school that their staff have:
- completed mandatory training and any other training required by the principal
- a current Working with children authority.
- Supply necessary equipment and any materials necessary to deliver the NDIS support at school during school time unless otherwise agreed with the principal in the Access agreement.

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey
Over the next 2 weeks, students in Years 2 to 6 will take part in the QEW survey.
The Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across 12 domains.
The information we acquire from the survey will help us better understand and support our students and meet their needs.

Sports News
Leichhardt Future Soccer Stars!
A big congratulations to two of our talented players, Jumanne and Ayden, who were successful in the first round of trials for the Ipswich North Zone Soccer Team. We wish them all the best as they move on to Trial 2 — well done, Jumanne and Ayden!

HPE Update – Term 2 at Leichhardt
This term in HPE, students have kicked off their Athletics unit in preparation for the upcoming Athletics Carnival in Week 9. During the first two weeks, students have been focusing on sprint events, including the 50m dash and relay runs. They’ve been learning key sprinting techniques and drawing inspiration from local sprinter Gout Gout, whose achievements have sparked great interest among the students.
Next week, we’ll be moving on to our first field event — long jump — alongside practicing our school’s traditional carnival ball games: Captain Ball, Leader Ball, and Tunnel Ball. We encourage you to check in with your child and ask them about how they’ve started their Athletics unit.

Soccer News
The Leichhardt Soccer Team returns to action this Friday, 2nd May, with their second fixture of the season against Fernvale. After a few delays due to wet weather, we’re excited to see the team back on the pitch. All games this season are being played at our school oval, so we’d love to see families and friends come along to support from 12:00 p.m. onwards. Our next match is against Deebing Heights State School Friday the 9th of May.

From The Teachers
Prep A
Prep A has settled back into Term 2 with excitement and engagement.
In maths, we are exploring number concepts and revised what each number quantity looks like. We LOVED using silly eyes to make number monsters! We repeated this activity again this time using cut-up straws and sticky PVA glue.
Now that we have learnt all of our sounds, we are focusing on blending the sounds together which means we are READING!!! We are also continuing to practice writing our letters and learning to write the letters we hear in words.
In English we are learning to compare imaginative and informative texts which is very exciting as we are exploring stories with animals! So far, we have explored stories with giraffes and crocodiles. What will we explore next? Mrs Chant was very excited as she was able to share photos of her feeding giraffes at Dubbo Zoo.
It is going to be a busy term!
Mrs Krings, Mrs Chant, Miss Emma, Miss Amy, Miss Caroline and Miss Shania.

Prep - 1B
It’s been a wonderful start to Prep/1 B this term as we continue to grow our skills and confidence in so many exciting areas!
In English, the children have been learning how to create simple sentences. We’ve been exploring the difference between imaginative and informative texts—talking about what’s real and what’s made-up! Students are beginning to share their ideas using both pictures and words. We are continuing to focus on sounds—learning how to hear, say, and blend them together to make words. This helps us as we become more confident readers and writers.
In maths, we’ve been counting forwards and backwards to and from 10. We’ve also started adding and subtracting numbers to 10 using hands-on activities, games, and number stories to make learning fun and meaningful.
We’re so proud of how hard everyone is working. Keep up the great effort, Pre/1 B!
